An Ancient Technique
Painting with Plaster
Bas-relief is a sculptural technique as old as humankind's artistic explorations. Some of the earliest known bas-reliefs are on the walls of caves thought to be 30,000 years old. The term comes from the Italian phrase basso-relievo, which translates to low relief. Artists carve into a flat substrate, creating images and shapes, producing a 3D appearance which can be viewed from all angles.
Originally used in architecture, Bas-relief sculptures became popular as independent art forms.
Modern Twist
Dust and Knives
Pulling inspiration from the ancient form of bas-relief, Korin uses a combination of both low-relief and high-relief to bring a modern twist to her work. Using pallet knives and carving tools to replicate the natural movement of the ocean, each painting finds life in its awe-striking, touchable finish.
